Hey guys, Gotham is back! Months after the show went on break, the mid season premiere of the second half of this season aired this week (let’s just say the third season continued) as Nygma introduced himself to Gotham as The Riddler with Bullock and Lucius caught up in his mind games, Jim had a family vacation with his sketchy uncle Frank and the Court of the Owls revealed its next move.
We left off on the last episode where Ed Nygma shot his best friend Oswald Cobblepot a.k.a. Penguin for killing his one true love and left him for dead in the river. Now he suffers an identity crisis. Ed trapped a chemistry professor and tested him on three riddles:
Riddle No. 1: “I can fill a room or just one heart. Others can have me, but I cannot be shared. What am I?” with which Professor Dyson answered with “knowledge” but it wasn’t right.
Riddle No. 2: “I can be a member of a group, but I can never blend in. What am I?”, again the professor guessed wrongly with “shadow”.
Riddle No. 3: “I feel your every move. I know your every thought. I’m with you from birth, and I’ll see you rot. What am I?” and Professor Dyson wasn’t allowed a guess and Nygma blew up his lab with him in it for his lack of competence.
514A (Bruce Wayne‘s clone) had apparently been getting trained by the Court of Owls to emulate Bruce’s every move and even his stories and was ready to take his place.
Nygma saw his best friend Penguin for advice of what to do (when he took hallucinogens that brought about a mental manifestation of Penguin). So his plan was actually to find someone who was just as clever as him and thought that by quizzing Gotham’s most creative brainiacs he would find someone who would matches his own mysterious mind. Ed reminded himself that Oswald became the Penguin because he killed Fish Mooney and so he needed to get a bigger foe in the person of Jim Gordon.
Lucius went to Harvey about a hunch he had that there was a serial killer killing off Gotham‘s most creative minds as 6 of them were already dead but Harvey said the GCPD had enough on its plate with them trying to clean up Jerome‘s crazy mess (I miss the Joker).
As they spoke, a messenger brought a message for Jim Gordon which Lucius and Harvey received on his behalf. Lucius quickly deciphered the message and knew where to find the next target of the serial killer’s killing spree.
Lucius decoded that the message had to do with a chess wizard’s tournament and not long after they got to the venue did Nygma (who was probably just delighted that someone was following his lead even though it was his initial pick) started electrocuting a couple of people at their tables. A new clue was found which was a phone number under the pieces of one of the victims’ tables. When Lucius called, Nygma told him he would find the next target in the belly of the beast, pawn on queens.
Jim Gordon who was approached by his Uncle Frank (who’s conspiring with Kathryn from the Court of the Owls) went to the woods on a vacation with him where he was convinced that he and Jim‘s father were both part of the Court and that they want Jim to become a part of it, too. Frank warned that the group was evil but he wants to infiltrate it from the inside with Jim’s help. Jim doubted Frank’s intentions but he’s listened all the same.
Lucius and Harvey decoded Nygma‘s clue from the chess tournament as they brought in a pawn shop worker on Queens Boulevard for questioning. After several threats, they found out that he was subbing for another worker named Teddy Therion whose last name was the Greek word for “beast”.
Alfred gave Bruce a note he found in the mailbox which was from Selina asking that they met to talk. At first, Bruce refused to go see her as she had ignored him ever since she found out he knew about her mother’s motives.
Harvey was to deliver a speech to the incoming class of cadets and after unsuccessfully searching for his badge, left Lucius to hunt down Therion alone. Therion, however, turned up dead with a stitched-up belly and right inside it, Dr Thompkins found Harvey’s missing badge which made Lucius decode yet the serial killer’s next target.
Nygma kidnapped Harvey and flooded the room full of cadets with what he said was deadly gas and the only antidote would be gotten if Lucius came to play his little game of riddles. Lucius agreed and was quizzed on the same three riddles the Professor missed earlier.
Bruce went to meet up with Selina only to be ambushed by a bunch of street thugs. She ran to his rescue, told him she did not send a note asking to meet with him and left him there for the thugs to deal with. Our future Batman, however, held his own (after receiving some beating) and beat up the street thugs.
Lucius got the first one wrong (correct answer is “loneliness” by the way) and the second he guessed “snowflake” and gave a sound reason for why it fits the second riddle but Nygma insisted it was still wrong because it had to be his answer. The third he answered with “reflection” which Nygma said he got right as he saved the day (it turned out the gas wasn’t deadly) and Harvey‘s life. Lucius also figured out that Nygma killed Therion, Professor Dyson, the other five intellectuals, and Penguin.
As Bruce walked away from the scene of his fight with the street thugs, he saw 514A in the mirror as he checked his bleeding nose wearing the exact same outfit as him. 514A went ahead to drug and kidnap Bruce.
Nygma popped up in Lucius’car and tried to scare him but Foxy (as Nygma called him) kept his cool then tried to appeal to whatever shred of sanity was left inside Ed Nygma. Unfortunately, there was no chance of redemption anymore as he is now the Riddler now.
Nygma went to the river where he killed Oswald and poured his hallucinogens in it as a farewell to his dear late friend.
Meanwhile, the next scene was shocking as we saw that Penguin was alive and was rescued and in the care of Ivy Pepper. Almost immediately, he remembered he had someone to kill. I can’t wait to see what his next move would be or how he deals and brings down Nygma.
The real Bruce Wayne ended the episode in a prison with that looked like Nanda Parbat and no way in escape.
Below is the trailer for the next episode that shows the beginning of Bruce Wayne‘s training as Batman with a man I want to believe is R’as al Ghul; Heroes Rise: These Delicate and Dark Obsessions…
