Winter is finally here guys! The long wait is over as Game of Thrones premiered its 7th season and it was good! Jon Snow organized the defense of the North as Cersei tried to even the odds and Daenerys went home.
The hour long episode kicked off with what seemed like a flashback of Walder Frey congratulating his men on the mass murder at the Red Wedding of season three and rewarding them with a feast. Remember Frey had his throat slit last season by Arya Stark after she fed him a meat pie made of his own two sons? Well it soon turned that this wasn’t a flashback but instead, a massacre as the assembled Freys choked to death from poisoned wine. Arya took off her mask (yeah it was her all along!) as she successfully killed off all the Freys and left a message saying “The North never forgets” for whoever asked what happened. Later on, she later revealed to some singing Lannister soldiers with a cameo by the musical guest star, Ed Sheeran that she was heading to King’s Landing to kill the Queen and not to Winterfell where I hoped she will reunite with the remaining Starks.
Cersei was having her patio painted with a giant map of Westeros so she can visually keep track of everybody who hates her but Jaime looked disturbed and tried to point out that she needed some allies to rule the 7 kingdoms. He also stated that she ruled 3 at most of the 7 kingdoms which caused Cersei to disclose that she had one ally in mind. Turned out the ally was Euron Greyjoy who was hell-bent on killing his niece and nephew (Theon and Yara Greyjoy who, by the way, have defected to support Danaerys) and also attempted to woo Cersei with his massive fleet of ships and two working hands, a shade at Jamie of course. Euron then declared that he was willing to do some work on speculation and bring Cersei back a gift.
Back at Winterfell, Jon Snow dealt with a matter before the Northern lords in the Great Hall on what to do with House Umber and Karstark after they betrayed the Starks to side with Ramsay Bolton. Jon declared that they would be forgiven since the traitors who made the decision were dead and now they all needed to stick together to fight the army of the dead but Sansa objected to his judgment and pressed the issue which made Jon look weak but he stood firm and let the young Karstark and Umber swear their allegiance to him as Littlefinger watched while he lurked in the shadows. Later in the courtyard, Tormund trained with Brienne as he prepared to leave for Eastwatch, while, Littlefinger went up to Sansa to try to play on her fears and aspirations. Back at the gate of Castle Black, Bran met Dolorous Edd and gave him a quick mind read to prove that he was a Stark so they could allow him in.
Meanwhile, Samwell Tarley had arrived at the Citadel to read and become a maester but instead Archmaester Ebrose put him on latrine and kitchen duty. Sam stole a key and began to study on his own which was how he discovered that there was a lot of White Walker-killing dragonglass at Dragonstone castle so he planned to send a message to Jon Snow. Later on, Ser Jorah, grabbed Sam from a cell where he was apparently being kept, to know if Daenerys had arrived in Westeros yet. I don’t get why he is there yet (any help?) and I feel it has to do with more than treatment for his greyscale but I might be wrong.
Remember back in the 4th season when the Hound and Arya were helped by a kind man and his daughter but The Hound repaid their generosity by stealing his money then he even went on to say that the farmer was weak and since winter was coming, they would just starve anyway? Well, he, Thoros and the rest of the Brotherhood came upon the familiar farmhouse where he noted the occupants didn’t want their company but the farmer and his daughter were long dead as they killed themselves to avoid starving. The Hound was angry at the fact of Beric Dondarrion kept resurrecting because he’s seemingly walking proof that a higher power exists while the farmer and his daughter died so he asked to know why Beric had been saved severally.
Finally, at Dragonstone Daenerys landed with her landing party (her trio of dragons, thousands-strong fleet, and her loyal entourage) on the shore and ascended the stone stairs to claim her birthright where we saw a preview of Daenerys’ throne room full of dark dragon-scale and then a Westeros table map, just like Cersei had on her floor map where she asked Tyrion Lannister, “Shall we begin?”. (House cleaning, maybe?)
